    General Performance Characteristics of HASTELLOY® Alloy Tube and Pipe

    1. Corrosion Performance

    Pitting and Crevice Resistance: The high Mo and W content provides exceptionally high Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), making HASTELLOY tubing virtually immune to localized attack in chloride-rich solutions.

    Weld Zone Integrity: Modern HASTELLOY grades (C-276, C-22, B-3, G-30) are designed with ultra-low carbon and controlled minor element additions to prevent detrimental phase formation (sensitization) in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), allowing them to be used in critical piping systems in the as-welded condition.

    Multi-Acid Service: C-type alloys resist both highly reducing (e.g., concentrated HCl) and highly oxidizing (e.g., nitric acid mixtures) media, a feat few other materials can achieve.

    2. Mechanical and Physical Properties

    Strength: HASTELLOY tubing provides superior tensile and yield strength compared to standard stainless steels, allowing for thinner walls under high pressure, which is beneficial for heat transfer efficiency and cost.

    Ductility: As solid solution alloys, they maintain excellent ductility and toughness, which is crucial for bending and cold-forming required in complex industrial piping layouts.

    3. Fabrication and Installation

    Forming: Although exhibiting high work hardening rates, HASTELLOY pipe can be readily cold-formed and bent using appropriate tooling, allowing for precise system fabrication.

    Heat Treatment: Most HASTELLOY wrought products are solution-annealed. C-type and G-type pipes generally do not require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) for corrosion resistance.



    Application Value of HASTELLOY® Tube and Pipe

    HASTELLOY tube and pipe are utilized in systems where extreme corrosivity necessitates the highest degree of material integrity and reliability:

    Chemical Process Industry (CPI): Reactor coils, distillation column piping, transfer lines, and heat exchanger bundles handling boiling acids, aggressive solvents, and mixed halide media.

    Pollution Control: Tubing and piping for scrubbers and stack liners in Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems to resist highly corrosive sulfurous/chloride condensate (C-276, C-22).

    Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemicals: Equipment and piping where metallic contamination must be strictly avoided, often utilizing the low corrosion rate of C-22.

    Acid Manufacturing: Piping and evaporators for concentrated Hydrochloric Acid (B-3) and Phosphoric Acid (G-30).
