Hastelloy Alloy Bar Description
HASTELLOY alloys are the premier family of nickel-based materials specifically formulated for ultimate resistance to the most aggressive corrosive media. HASTELLOY bar and rod stock are critical raw materials used for manufacturing high-integrity, precision-machined components such as fasteners, valve stems, pump shafts, and fittings in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and pollution control industries.
Core HASTELLOY Alloy Bar/Rod Grades Comparison
HASTELLOY bar stock is selected based on the specific type of corrosive media: C-Type alloys for versatile use, B-Type for severe reducing acids, and G-Type for strong oxidizing acids.

General Performance Characteristics of HASTELLOY Alloy Bar and Rod
1. Corrosion and Localization Resistance
Universal Resistance: C-type alloys provide performance across both reducing (high Mo) and oxidizing (high Cr) chemical conditions, ensuring structural integrity for components like valve stems that encounter variable process streams.
Localized Attack Immunity: The high content of molybdenum and tungsten guarantees extremely high Pitting Resistance Equivalent Numbers (PREN), essential for preventing premature failure of fasteners and shafts in chloride-rich solutions.
Weld Zone Stability: Bar stock of C-276 and C-22 maintains corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition, which is critical for fabricating custom pipe fittings and complex machined assemblies without post-weld heat treatment.
2. Mechanical and Physical Properties
High Strength and Toughness: These solid solution alloys offer superior tensile and yield strength compared to stainless steels, providing reliability for high-torque applications like pump shafts.
Thermal Stability: Grades like C-22 and B-3 are engineered for enhanced thermal stability, minimizing the formation of brittle intermetallic phases during moderate temperature exposure.
3. Machinability (Fabrication)
Work Hardening: HASTELLOY alloys exhibit a high rate of work hardening. Machining bar stock requires rigid setups, positive feeds, deep cuts, and low speeds to ensure material removal rather than surface deformation.
Forming: The bar stock can be hot-forged or cold-formed into various shapes (like bolt heads or valve bodies) but requires greater power and care due to high strength.
Application Value of HASTELLOY Bar and Rod
HASTELLOY bar and rod stock are indispensable for manufacturing precision, load-bearing components where material failure due to corrosion would result in catastrophic system failure or contamination:
Chemical Process Industry (CPI): Valve stems, packing glands, pump shafts, agitator assemblies, and specialized fasteners for reactors handling aggressive acids and solvents.
Pollution Control: Dampers, fasteners, and structural internals for wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers and waste incinerators exposed to highly acidic condensate.
Pharmaceutical: High-purity process equipment requiring contamination-free internal components, often utilizing C-22 due to its stability.
Marine and Offshore: Specialized hardware and fasteners exposed to seawater and varying chemical processes.
